My crit partners for Nevermore know that there are a wide variety of monsters in the book. Most of them are some variety of vaguely familiar supernatural entity (I’d like to think I’ve instilled some of my own unique flavoring to them, but as they say, the proof is in the pudding. The delicious, terrifying pudding). But one of the monsters leans a little more heavily toward Hollywood Horror than my typical ghostly fare. The basic anatomy leaves some room for variation between monsters based on *redacted for spoilers*.

Recently, I did some image searches to see other weird animals I could draw from for those variations.

I hit the mother load.

This is a shaved bear. It is the stuff of nightmares. And fodder for my creative process.

In reality, this is a bear named Dolores in Germany who’s lost all of her hair due to a mysterious condition that’s plagued other female bears in that zoo. Read more here. I feel terrible for the bears, but at least their suffering is going to help me build a better monster.

I have no heart.

About Morgan Maria D'Isidoro

Morgan Maria D'Isidoro has lived in Baltimore, MD for most of her life, saving a handful of failed escape attempts. Given the murder rates, she'll probably die here too. Morgan is a writer of speculative fiction and poetry, a musician of dubious quality, cat aficionado, art history fangirl, kitchen sorceress, recovering pyromaniac, accomplished liar, and an all around person of questionable employability.
